How to get started!!
If anything I am more excited than anything . I can not wait until the kickin it at kickapoo days begin because when they do I will be in attendance and will have a great time. The best thing that I think I will get out of this is that when I return to school at DHS I will show off my talent!!

Good and Nerve Racking
I thought that that the clean up at Kickapoo was very good. Because we usually take what we have for granted untill its gone. So the clean up was very good for the environment. And I think the interview was very nerve racking, because you didn’t want to say the wrong thing. But besides that it was ok. And I can’t wait until the program starts in the summer. Wow That Was Fun

Fun and Varied
My experience at Kickapoo has been very fun. We have already done different things such as paddle boating and giving people interviews. I have met a lot of new people. I hope to accomplish a lot such as learn about different things. I really can’t wait to see everybody again at our next meeting. The funniest thing I did and hope to do it again is paddle boating. My boat’s chain popped so I jumped off and went on another and left my partners on the boat, but luckily someone came to fix the chain.

Excited and Scared
Oh my gosh! The experience of these last few meetings has just made me even more excited about June 25-26. Every time we meet I feel that I have become a little more intelligent about what we will be doing pretty soon. The way I feel about this program is that this will keep increasing my knowledge about the whole thing and I know for a fact that when I start my ” New Era in Education” at Danville High School I will have knowledge of marketing, videotaping and editing. Also for everyone to know: I was one of the ones on the S.O.S boat that was out in the middle of the lake with a popped chain. I would like to let everyone know that I will not kayak for the life of me. That is I think one of the most dangerous and scariest things ever on this earth. But so far my experiences have been so great!

Getting a Pulse on Advertising
Kimberlie sent me the links to the YouTube video interviews of the teens - what a great idea to have the kids interview one another. I wonder how they liked the flip cameras? The quality seemed pretty good. I wanted to assess what the participants knew about advertising before we did the workshops ...seems like they know a lot. I think they’ll be surprised at what goes into actually making an advertisement. This will be fun.

First Interviews
Yesterday, Henry and I went back to the Club to interview the teens on videotape. We are trying to get a baseline snapshot of where they are today in terms of their communication and media skills and use of technology, the quality of their relationships to their community, family and self and their school and career goals. We believe this project will positively impact all of these areas. By interviewing them at the end of the project and asking them the same questions, we can learn from the teens’ own words, how their perceptions, knowledge, goals and skills have changed. I was impressed by their understanding of community, their desire to make the world a better place and their deep appreciation of our relationship with them.

Kickapoo Clean Up Day
Saturdays are normally our chance to relax and hang out as a family - no rushing around to get to school. But this Saturday I roused the family and we set off to Danville for the Clean-up day. Lukas, my nearly 4-year-old, was excited to use a ‘grabber’ to pick up trash items. Paulina, my 2-year-old was happy to wear gloves and trample along the woods. Lukas also learned what a ‘cigarette butte’ and a cigarette was - given the number of them we picked up at the side of the road! “That’s icky!” is Paulina’s newest phrase. We saw Rickey and Brandon picking up trash, too and we hung out with them for awhile. It was a very well-organized event. The children loved seeing Spotless the dog - playing on the playground and with the special games that UIUC extension brought - and the hotdogs and cheetos are always appreciated. We felt happy that we helped clean up the park.

Cleanin’ Up at Kickapoo
Henry and I got to Kickapoo at 8am for the clean-up. He took video and I shot still photos. The atmosphere was laid back and friendly. There were lots of different kinds of people participating: families with children, couples, lots of kids, Caucasians and African-Americans and multi-racial people, some from Vermilion County and others from Champaign County. Michelle was there with her lovely family and kids and so was Brandon and Rickey. I spoke to a couple of people who had come as part of their church. Many folks I spoke to found out about the clean-up through WILL’s promotion. That was cool. I thought it would be so easy to paddle the paddle boats while Henry sat in the back with the video camera. Was I wrong! It was a work-out the entire time! Thank goodness, Don, a regular at the Landing, offered to steer and paddle the boat with me. We got lots of good video and stills. I love to anticipate the next action for my shot. I got lots of photos of bags of garbage flying into the dumpsters, hands dropping garbage into bags, piles of garbage in canoes, canoeists, and families hiking the roads picking up garbage. The day went fast and was fun!
